Captain’s log, stardate 41711:

Our team has have recently encountered a strange new planet, which our sensors at first detected due to its having a breathable atmosphere. An exploration party was assembled and beamed down to the planet, where they found a world abandoned. No sign of intelligent life remained, only great structures that our archaeologists are examining now, trying to piece together the mysteries of the civilization that created them, one which seems to have achieved untold levels of advancement before simply vanishing.

Perhaps most notable among these archaeological finds has been a great library, a vast repository of art and literature that spans volumes, carefully crafted and preserved for future generations. Truly, theirs must have been a thriving culture, one that produced work of only the highest quality and valued great and noble treatises that live on, speaking to universal themes of the fragility of the heart, the agony of loss, and the everlasting triumph of love. Scientists and scholars back at headquarters have already begun to examine some of the recovered material and have not been shy about numbering these works among the finest testimonies to the artistic spirit our galaxy has ever seen.

Why this civilization died out, we may never know, but judging by their textual records, we can tell one thing for certain: they knew how to have a good time.
